I enjoyed the original IGT Star Trek slot a lot; the latest game – Against all Odds – simply blows that one away. This is better in terms of graphics, game play and the bonus rounds are amazing too. If I had not played the ‘old’ version first it would have felt extremely tame by comparison. Against all Odds is themed on the movie of the same name, and does focus on the new and younger crew.

This is a 720-ways MultiWay Xtra game. This involved a diamond shape on the reels, with 3, 4, 5, 4 and 3 rows across the screen. This system also awards wins from right to left, with any consecutive rows of 3+ symbols starting at either the left or right hand reel a winner. You’ll tune into this very quickly if you have not played using it on other games.

All Star Slots Review

Graphics are stunning, and I do not use this label lightly. The reels are set against a backdrop of Saturn, with asteroids floating in and out of view. Animations and symbols (which are mostly members of the crew) are top quality too. Sounds are a mix of stirring music, beeps and space noises and quotes from the main characters. There are a lot of these quotes, and sometimes they feel a little out of context.

There is an on-reels feature called energized wilds, where you get assigned wild symbols at random. The main feature (called Defend the Enterprise) is amazing. This involves video clips of a battle from the film, and then a battle of your own. Once this is over, you go to a wheel game – and hopefully land a big prize.

With the 720 ways to win setup, you do not need to select win-lines before you spin. Instead you choose your coin value, with each spin based on 60 coins. You can spin from 1c per line, or 60c a spin and set up auto spin if you wish.

The large amount of winning combinations on MultiWay Xtra games means that individual wins are smaller than you might be used to. What you will find is that you get multiple wins across the reels, so the 1000 coins max (for 5 of the Federation logos) can be much larger than it seems. The characters Kirk and Spock are the next big payers, with 500 and 300 coins respectively. Smaller payments are made for the supporting characters and weapon symbols. It is great to see the playing cards axed for this slot.

There are 3 more symbols to cover. The scatters (red symbols with Scatter on them) pay for 3, 4 or 5 in proportion to your total bet. This is 3, 20 or 100x. The wild (again, simply says wild) substitutes for the regular symbols. This can be stacked, which does help the wins to add up nicely. Finally the enemy ship triggers the Enterprise Defender Bonus. You’ll need 5 of these, one on each reel.

First of all you get a snippet from the film. This is not just a 5 second quote; it is a full battle scene. You can skip this on later bonus rounds. Next you can choose whether to play the defender part of the bonus, or simply skip to the wheel round. The defender game is fun, though this is not a skill game, and so the rank awarded at the end will be random.

You take the perspective of the Enterprise, and must target and fire at enemy missiles. At first there are just a few, though it quickly becomes impossible to get them all. This is very entertaining, and feels more video game than any other bonus round I have played on a slot.

Next you go to a second screen, where you spin different wheels depending on your rank. You have single spin and can earn more spins and more ‘pointers’, which determine your prizes. There are also multipliers (or for the lowest rank, added coins) added after you spin. This wheel does award some big wins at times.

I am not easily impressed by slot games, though this one blew me away. The graphics and sounds were exceptional, and the game-play varied enough without being too intensive or stop-start. The energized wilds breaks up the in-reel play nicely, and if you get 3+ extra wilds in the multiway setup, those wins can multiply nicely. The bonus round is something else, adding an entertaining video game (along with movie sounds and graphics) really brings this slot to life.
